24 Badges

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) — Girl Scouts will have plenty to do with 24 new badges designed to help them rise to leadership in crucial areas that traditionally have been male-dominated, including automotive engineering, STEM career exploration, entrepreneurship and civics.
That’s the message the Badgerland Council of the Girl Scouts of Wisconsin and Girl Scouts of the USA delivered as they announced the new badges.
“In a year of unprecedented global change, our country’s need for strong, broad-minded and decisive leadership has never been greater,” the Scout groups said in a news release.
“As the premiere girl leadership organization in the world, I’m thrilled that we can offer our membership these exciting, timely opportunities for girls to grow into the world leaders of tomorrow,” said Marci Henderson, CEO of the Badgerland Council, which has a service center in La Crosse.
“It is so powerful to watch girls take the skills and experiences they gain from Girl Scouts and develop into strong, courageous action-takers,” Henderson said.
The new badges include:
• Entrepreneurship category — These badges for kindergarten-through-12th-grade girls will offer age-appropriate exercises to create and pitch a product or service that solves a problem. They will build their own business plans and factor in topics such as production, cost, profit, marketing and competition. Badges in this category are Toy Business Designer, Budding Entrepreneur, Business Jumpstart, Business Creator, Business Startup and Entrepreneur Accelerator.
• STEM Career Exploration Badge — Second-through-eighth-graders will be able to check out career interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Receiving particular emphasis will be computer science, nature/environmental science, engineering, design, health and agriculture.
• Automotive Engineering path — Girls in kindergarten through fifth grade will be able to design their own vehicles, test prototypes, create their own assembly lines and learn about the future of transportation. This path will include three badges each for Daisies, Brownies and Juniors.
• Civics — This badge group will help girls in kindergarten through 12th grade understand how local, state and federal government works, as well as prepare them to be voters, activists and even political leaders. They will research laws, voting, the electoral college and the representation of women in government. They also will research their own government officials and be encouraged to meet them. Badges include Democracy for Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors.
The Badgerland Council’s virtual programming gives girls opportunities to build on badge-earning and award-earning programs as well as enrichment for volunteers and families.
Although the council’s on-site camps are suspended for the summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Badgerland Girl Scouts are receiving many opportunities to get a taste of camp life with “Happily, Ever Outdoors ‘Sneak Peek’ Camps.”
The program includes combinations of hands-on activities to do at home, virtual opportunities delivered by resource experts and in-person virtual get-togethers that camp staffers will lead via Zoom.
The Badgerland Council serves more than 7,000 girls and 3,600 adult members in 21 counties in southwest and south-central Wisconsin, as well as Houston County in Minnesota and Allamakee County in Iowa.
Besides La Crosse, it has service centers in Madison, Janesville and Platteville
